The famous jazz musician (drummer), Roy Haynes, is simply a living legend at 81 years young. He has played with everyone from Louis Armstrong to Lester Young to John Coltrane...and you can see him this week at the Village Vanguard (if you're lucky enough to live in New York).
You can also read this fantastic interview of Mr. Haynes that recently appeared in the NY Times:
"We were always playing opposite Machito in Birdland in those years," he said. "And I always did like the sound of timbales, the approach. Sometimes when I'd play my solos, I'd approach the traps with that same effect, like when I hit rim shots." (A rim shot means hitting the head and the rim of the drum at the same time.) "Older gentlemen like Chick Webb and Papa Jo, they did rim shots too. But doing it with no snares on, with that tom-tom sort of Afro-Cuban feeling, I always liked that."
Run, do not walk, to The Vanguard!

I wish I still lived in NY! I used to get to see Roy play live so often in the late seventies and early eighties. Now I'd like to jump on a plane to catch him playing at the Vanguard if I could afford to. Hell, reincarnation aside, I might only live once, and there's no way I'd rather spend the rest of my days than listening to Roy Owen Haynes! I love you Roy!
Amen, Irene!
We love Roy here, too...And he's influenced soooo many drummers over the years, myself included. He's a national treasure!
