VoxPop Cafe' - Brooklyn, NY
November 2009 Mentorship: Hip-Hop Meets Physics!
Our first in a series of concerts that uses jazz to raise awareness
and inspire participation in our "dialogue BEYOND music!"
This one took place in November 2009 at the VoxPop Cafe in Ditmas Park,
Brooklyn, and featured Sam Hillmer - founder of the music production
company, Representing
NYC!, and community activist/ artist teacher who helps aspiring
young rap musicians realize their calling to record CDs and perform
all around the New York City Tri-State area; Weldon
MacDonald - New York City public school physics teacher who started
a robotics club at his school; and the rap group with whom Sam works
called Nine
11 Thesaurus (featuring Shasty, P.Dot, and Breezy).
Following the quartet's performance, Sam and Weldon compared and contrasted
mentorship models they use to direct and inspire their students. The
event concluded with an awesome hip-hop performance by Nine 11 Thesaurus!
