If you missed this fabulous article in this past Sunday's issue of the Arts section of the NY Times, now's your chance to become acquainted with the master cellist, Matt Haimovitz.
He's on a solo tour around the country, rock musician-style, appearing in your local coffee shop, pub, and pizza parlor. He's given up the money and the prestige of the traditional classical orchestra soloist slot for the vagaries of the touring musician.
From the article (which we've reprinted on our site if you can't get it from the Times):
"Ultimately, Mr. Haimovitz's tour may be proving the under-recognized value of new music in attracting new audiences. But the enraptured faces in the semicircle at the beer-drenched pizza parlor in Mississippi suggested an equally important insight into the power of smaller numbers, the richness of direct contact."
Bravo, Matthew!
