With the big Super Bowl game coming up this Sunday, what better time to compare and contrast the American sports economic landscape than now!
During Bill Maher's New Rules segment from last week's show, he brilliantly compared and contrasted the socialist organization called the National Football League with the pure capitalist, winner-take-all model that professional baseball has embraced:

Maher makes a strong case why 100 million Americans watch the Superbowl vs. just 15 million who watch the World Series. His basic premise? Football spreads the wealth around. Hence, a team like The Packers, from Green Bay, Wisconsin (population 100,000), can compete in the Superbowl against the Pittsburgh Steelers - another team from a small metropolitan area. And remember: The Steelers are appearing in their 6th Superbowl!
Bill then makes the obvious comparison to the Pittsburgh Pirates of Major League Baseball. When was the last time they were in a World Series? With their $40 million payroll, they stand no chance of competing with the Yankees and their $240 million payroll.
Don't miss this week's New Rules!
