John Bolton as Ambassador to UN?
April 12, 2005 1:53 AM

The Bush Administration's nomination of Bolton to the ambassadorship to the United Nations is another example of Up-is-Downism that continues right along. It is simply amazing that they want to send Bolton to the U.N., considering the man said the following:

In a Wall Street Journal op-ed in 1997, Bolton articulated his dismissive view of international treaties. ìTreaties are law only for U.S. domestic purposes,î he wrote, ìIn their international operation, treaties are simply political obligations.î
Bolton has since the mid-1990s led the charge of the anti-multilateralists and UN bashers against the International Criminal Court. Writing in the National Interest, a journal cofounded by Irving Kristol, Bolton argued in 1998 that signing the ICC would make the ìpresident, the cabinet officers who comprise the National Security Council, and other senior civilian and military leaders responsible for our defense and foreign policy Ö the potential targets of the politically unaccountable Prosecutor in Rome .î
ìMany Republicans in Congress--and perhaps a majority,î Bolton said before joining the George W. Bush administration, ìnot only do not care about losing the General Assembly vote but actually see it as a ëmake-my-dayí outcome. Indeed once the vote is lostÖ this will simply provide further evidence to many why nothing should be paid to the UN system.î

...and finally:

In a 1994 speech at the liberal World Federalist Association, Bolton declared that ìthere is no such thing as the United Nations.î To underscore his point, Bolton said. ìIf the UN secretary building in New York lost ten stories, it wouldnít make a bit of difference.î

Also, Fred Kaplan over at Slate has the best summation.
