New Orleans Drowning
September 2, 2005 4:29 PM

In October of 2001, Mark Fischetti wrote an incredibly comprehensive article in Scientific America online entitled: Drowning New Orleans.

The tagline commentary was:

A major hurricane could swamp New Orleans under 20 feet of water, killing thousands. Human activities along the Mississippi River have dramatically increased the risk, and now only massive reengineering of southeastern Louisiana can save the city.

It's an incredibly prescient article. Sad but true, as it turns out.

He's also got an editorial published in the New York Times today.

We knew about the potential for this disaster in New Orleans, and yet didn't take appropriate action. Maybe, just maybe, we'll be able to learn from this.
