115 pounds of manure per day

Yup, that's what a cow produces on its way to pumping out its milk that we consume. Just another reason to switch to non-dairy milk, such as soy and rice milk. They come in all sorts of flavors (plain, vanilla, chocolate, strawberry, and even coffee), and are easily stored in vacuum packed containers that can last months in the closet storage area!

Finally, the production of milk is a totally inefficient use of our land: an acre of land that can produce 2,700 calories of oats yields just 410 calories in the form of milk when the oats are fed into the milk-making cow machine (source: A Vegetarian Sourcebook).

Read this terrific essay from the Winter 2003 edition of the Sierra Atlantic.
