There's a fantastic debate series going on over at New York University covering many of the most important issues facing our nation and democracy today:

Rethink your point of view with Intelligence Squared U.S. (IQ2US), Oxford-style debates live from New York City. Based on the highly successful debate program based in London, Intelligence Squared, Intelligence Squared U.S. has presented 39 debates on a wide range of provocative and timely topics. From global warming and the financial crisis, to Afghanistan/Pakistan and the death of mainstream media, Intelligence Squared brings together the world’s leading authorities on the day's most important issues.

Since its inception in 2006, the goals have been to provide a new forum for intelligent discussion, grounded in facts and informed by reasoned analysis; to transcend the toxically emotional and the reflexively ideological; and to encourage recognition that the opposing side has intellectually respectable views.

If you go to IntelligenceSquaredUS.org you'll find many provocative debates featuring two proponents on each side of the issue, such as "Is Big Government Stifling the American Spirit?" or "Should We Treat Terrorists Like Enemy Combatants or Criminals?"

One debate you can watch online took place last month entitled: "Is Islam a Religion of Peace?"

Is the rise of terrorism and violence justifiably traced to the teachings of Islam, or is this call to war a twisted interpretation of the true Muslim faith? Most of the world’s 1.5 billion Muslims are moderates who see Islamic terrorism as a violation of their sacred texts. Is it wrong to let a radical minority represent authentic Islam? Has fear blinded us to its lessons of tolerance and peace?

Check out the video of the debate, but make sure to hide your eyes to the results of the voting. You'll want to watch the entire debate and then see which side "won."
