The British foreign policy think tank, Chatham House, has issued a new report that says, "the Iraqi government is now largely powerless and irrelevant in many parts of the country." It says there is "not one civil war, but many local civil wars involving several organisations struggling for power."
The briefing paper is entitled, "Accepting Realities in Iraq," and argues that there isn't a "single" civil war taking place right now, but many little civil wars pitting factions against each other.
The report accuses each of Iraq's major neighbouring states - Iran, Saudi Arabia and Turkey - of having reasons "for seeing the instability there continue, and each uses different methods to influence developments".
For instance, in a BBC article last month, we learned that "a man arrested by US soldiers after placing a truck bomb which failed to go off told interrogators he had been paid $30,000 for the task."
Where is that money coming from?
As 80-90 Americans die each month, and many more times that amount of Iraqis die, when will we realize that we're only making matters worse for them? It cannot get better until we leave, that's for sure...
