Consilience Awareness Concert Series - Monthly Events
The monthly event at VoxPop Café in Brooklyn began in November 2009 and will continue each month in 2010. Featuring a set of music followed by a panel discussion, each event features a new social change issue. Our goal has been to increase civic engagement by partnering with the VoxPop Cafe in a festive afternoon that's both fun and informative!

November: Part I
The first panel was entitled “Mentorship: Hip-Hop meets Physics!” Sam Hillmer, community organizer and founder of music production company, Representing NYC! compared and contrasted mentorship models with New York City public school physics teacher, Weldon MacDonald, who mentors a Robotics club at his school. The event concluded with a hip-hop concert by three of Sam’s kids from the rap group, Nine 11 Thesaurus.

January: Part II
The second panel featured a presentation by Chris Neidl, advocacy coordinator from Solar1.org - a New York City solar and alternative energy advocacy non-profit. Chris discussed Solar One's mission of bringing a more sustainable, solar-powered, future to residents of New York City through directed activism and individual energy conservation. He attended the Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen and spoke about the repercussions from that major world event! -
February: Part III
Our third installment was focused on the fantastic 501(3)(c) from Washington, D.C., called The $10 Club. Run single-handily by Adam Roberts, this organization is funded by over 350 "club" members, each donating $10 a month to help those less fortunate around the world. The money is pooled with all the other contributors' money, and 100% is used to fund a poverty alleviation project in a developing country. Roberts administers the club, but does not draw any remuneration. For the first two-and-a-half years, all costs associated with running the organization came out of his pocket. Now, foundation grants and additional member contributions help underwrite operational expenses. "The mission of the $10 Club is to lift people out of poverty wherever we can across the globe."
Adam's "little" club has donated over $250,000 in over 60 countries since 2002! To learn more about The $10 Club and start contributing, visit his site now.
