R.I.P. Ed Thigpen
January 14, 2010 10:42 AM

The fantastic drummer, Ed Thigpen, who made his name with the Oscar Peterson trio, passed away yesterday. He was 79.

Here he is in 1961 in Italy as part of that famous trio:

And to hear him on CDs, you can pick up "Night Train" or "Trio Live" to get the full effect of his swinging virtuosity, especially with the brushes, which was his specialty.

He lived in Copenhagen for the past 20+ years, and he will be sorely missed.
