Weekly MP3 (7/18/07): "Theme from Wonder Woman," by the Lee Metcalf Trio
July 18, 2007 6:56 PM

OK, this is going to crack you up!

Back in 1999, I was asked to play drums on a project of recorded American T.V. Theme Songs for the SubConsious label in Japan. Lee Metcalf led a trio consisting of myself on drums, "Jan, The Russian" on organ, and Lee on guitar. We recorded the theme from "S.W.A.T.," "77 Sunset Strip," and "Wonder Woman." Hilarious, right?

Well, here's our version, and if you go to this page, you can listen to a streamed version of the original (click on the "Wonder Woman Theme from ABC" version).

Now, you're probably wondering - who was Wonder Woman? From TVTunesOnline.com we get this description:

Set in the 1940's, Wonder Woman, a true Amazon princess from Paradise Island saves the life of Steve Trevor (Lyle Waggoner), a pilot, and returns with him to America. Yeoman Prince twirled into the star-spangled Wonder Woman and with her bullet-deflecting wrist bands and magic lasso, the Nazis didn't have a chance.

When the series returned in 1977, it was retitled "The New Adventures of Wonder Woman" and the time period was moved to the present. Now working for the IADC, Prince hadn't aged a day but Steve Trevor was now known as Steve Trevor Jr, the son of Wonder Woman's original love interest. Wonder Woman now battled subversives, terrorists, and others bent on world domination.

Ahh...but it gets better, because there are lyrics to this WONDERful song, written by Charles Fox. See if you can sing along (and WONDER whether she could save us from the evil-doers in Iraq):

Wonder Woman, Wonder Woman.
All the world's waiting for you,
and the power you possess.

In your satin tights,
Fighting for your rights
And the old Red, White and Blue.

Wonder Woman, Wonder Woman.
Now the world is ready for you,
and the wonders you can do.

Make a hawk a dove,
Stop a war with love,
Make a liar tell the truth.

Wonder Woman,
Get us out from under, Wonder Woman.
All our hopes are pinned on you.
And the magic that you do.

Stop a bullet cold,
Make the Axis fall,
Change their minds, and change the world.
Wonder Woman, Wonder Woman.
You're a wonder, Wonder Woman.

Finally, this image of Wonder Woman says it all:
