R & B star, John Legend, has a new CD out which he's been promoting non-stop, and the NY Times caught up with him recently to discuss it. Ivy League educated (Univ. of Pennsylvania), he talks about issues of the day, BEYOND music:
On the air, he waxed poetic about Bob Marley and serious about the economist Jeffrey D. Sachs, whose book “The End of Poverty” he was reading.“You think that’s attainable?” asked the D.J., somewhat taken aback by the turn of the interview.
“Absolutely!” he said. “The end of poverty is an attainable goal. It just takes the will of the people.”
Clearly, Mr. Legend has more on his mind than promoting his latest CD.
A self-described nerd who wants to change the world as much as he wants to change contemporary music, he is also a paradox. Like his music, Mr. Legend, a 27-year-old singer-songwriter, is at once old-fashioned and trendy, courtly and cool, attention-grabbing and understated. Throw in his swagger and distressed jeans that actually fit and Mr. Legend comes across more like a preppie Joe College than a typical R&B star. But after selling three million copies of his debut album, “Get Lifted,” and winning three Grammys, he can afford to come across any way he pleases.
Go, John, Go!
