Playing "Stairway to Heaven" Longer (time tested with piss)
May 2, 2005 11:32 PM

How's this for a new idea?

It seems that the folks over at Elixir Strings of Elkton, Maryland, have come up with a sweat-free guitar string. That is, if your guitar strings don't last too long due to sweaty fingers (and, hence, rusty strings), this new electroplated plain-steel strings will resist your sweat.

How do they know? They dumped the strings into a vat of acetic acid, salt, and urea. That's right, UREA - which comes from URINE...

This is a story only rockers would love...

Actually, urea doesn't come from urine. Urea is simply a product of protein metabolism, which happens to be in most bodily fluids(including urine). I believe there is also a drug called "Carbamide" which is basically the same thing as urea. They use it for kidney dialysis as far as I know. Sorry to kill your peepee fun.

So in essence, Elixir cleaned the metal(acetic acid) and then coated it with ammonia and carbon? Sounds like a clean string to me. I'm not quite sure what the salt is there for other than to eat away the metal. Perhaps they used Ford's trademark "Pre-Rust" so it appears like the product isn't getting rustier and dirtier.

Regardless, if I want pee on my strings, I'll do it myself thank you very much.
