Roy Haynes
(b. 3/13/26 - Roxbury, MA)
Title: Out of the Afternoon Personnel: Roy Haynes (drums), Roland Kirk (tenor sax, manzello, stritch, flutes), Tommy Flanagan (piano), Henry Grimes (bass). Recorded: 1962 Label: Impulse! Comments: Roy Haynes - Snap, Crackle, Pop! This sizzling drummer is one of the most influential drummers of jazz history. Still performing in his '80s as if he were 40 years younger, his career has spanned from the big band era to the jazz/funk of the 70's to today's vital jazz scene. He's played with everyone, from Lester Young to Charlie Parker to Sarah Vaughan to you name it! And this CD from 1962 is an impeccably recorded document which showcases his playing to the max! We can't say enough about this national treasure...except - unbelievable! |

Title: John Coltrane - Dear Old Stockholm Personnel: Roy Haynes (drums), John Coltrane (tenor sax), McCoy Tyner (piano), Jimmy Garrison (bass). Recorded: 1963 & 1965 Label: Impulse! Comments: This is an important CD in that John Coltrane rarely used another drummer other than Elvin Jones (during the last 5-7 years of his life, that is). Haynes propels 'Trane to different ideas and areas in his playing, especially in the 15 minute marathon, "One Down, One Up." Talk about energy, ambition, inspiration, and perspiration...whew! |

Title: Chick Corea - Remembering Bud Powell Personnel: Roy Haynes (drums), Chick Corea (piano), Kenny Garrett (alto sax), Wallace Roney (trumpet), Christian McBride (bass). Recorded: 1997 Label: Stretch Comments: Still performing like it's his last performance, this band toured for over a year, and out came this CD. Simply amazing music in the late 90's featuring two jazz giants, in addition to the current crop of top players on the other instruments. |
