Kenny Garrett
(b. 10/9/60 - Detroit, MI)
Title: Triology Personnel: Kenny Garrett (alto sax), Charnett Moffett, Kiyoshi Kitagawa (bass), Brian Blade (drums) Recorded: 1995 Label: Warner Brothers Comments: Kenny Garrett got his first big break playing with Miles Davis in the early '80's and has gone on to make a name for himself on the alto saxophone. His playing is full of fire and his sound is dry and crisp. As a leader, he has influenced many new alto players with his unique vocabulary. This recording is not only one of the best CD's of the '90's, the sound is incredible, where every snap of the snare drum and thump of the bass is crystal clear. Also, the amazing young drummer, Brian Blade, got his first big break in Kenny's band, and is stunningly represented on this recording. |

Title: Songbook Personnel: Kenny Garrett (alto sax), Nat Reeves (bass), Kenny Kirkland (piano), Jeff "Tain" Watts (drums). Recorded: 1997 Label: Warner Brothers Comments: Songbook, comprised entirely of Kenny's compositions, is another in a long line of his superb recordings. On this CD is showcased Wynton Marsalis' first pianist (Kenny Kirkland) and drummer ("Tain" Watts). Sadly, this is one of Kenny Kirkland's last CD's, as he passed away in 1999. |

Title: Pursuance - The Music of John Coltrane Personnel: Kenny Garrett (alto sax), Pat Methany (guitar), Brian Blade (drums), Rodney Whitaker (bass). Recorded: 1996 Label: Warner Brothers Comments: Another stellar recording by this young master who has influenced so many up-and-coming alto players. This time he tips his hat to the great John Coltrane, backed up by the swinging Brian Blade and Rodney Whitaker. Note Pat Methany's "screaming" guitar effects he pulls out on some of the tracks. |
