The Fed's tennis court.
June 24, 2012 8:55 AM

Who knew?

Few secrets escape the fortress of the Federal Reserve, but the public has full access to one of its lesser-known corners: the tennis court.

Since the mid-1970s the Fed has maintained a public tennis court in a park nestled between its Washington offices and the State Department.

One recent board member who played on the court is Kevin Warsh, who joined the Fed in 2006 and departed in 2011. Mr. Warsh said he and Mr. Greenspan occasionally challenged Timothy Geithner, then president of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, and former Treasury Secretary John Snow.

In late summer, the competition traveled westward to the Fed's annual conference in Jackson Hole, Wyo., where Mr. Warsh said he and Gene Sperling, now director of the National Economic Council, played against Larry Summers, who held that post before him, and Mr. Geithner, who is now Treasury Secretary.

"I recall prevailing over Tim, more often on the tennis court than off," Mr. Warsh said.

These days the court is still in regular use both by the public and Fed staffers, although not among the Fed's current seven board members.

See how tennis and money go hand in hand?
