Factory farms, school children, and the food supply
February 18, 2008 12:54 PM

The largest beef recall in U.S. history has begun as a direct result of this video taken by an undercover animal rights activist associated with the Humane Society of the United States:

The video raised questions about the safety of the meat, because cows that cannot walk, called downer cows, pose an added risk of diseases including mad cow disease. The federal government has banned downer cows from the food supply.

Watch the video to see what the impact of factory farming has on these poor animals. Each sick cow is extra profit to the company, which treats its animals inhumanely as the march towards greater profitability continues.

If the video is abhorrent to you, eat less meat or only organic, grass-fed beef, become a vegetarian, sign the petition, or all of the above. But inaction in the face of this video is not an option.

and do your bit to remove cruelty from your plate.

From the Humane Society's website:

An investigation by The Humane Society of the United States at a cattle slaughterhouse has led to the largest beef recall in U.S. history. Our investigation documented animals too sick or injured to stand or walk - called "downers" by industry - being kicked, beaten, dragged with chains, shocked with electric prods, sprayed in the face with hoses, and rammed by forklifts in efforts to get them to their feet to pass USDA inspection.

This unacceptable cruelty potentially puts the food supply at risk - at least 12 of the 15 identified cases of mad cow disease in North America to date have reportedly been downers. Take action today by sending the message below to the USDA.

Despite claims that downers were being eliminated from the food supply, downed animals may be falling through the cracks as a result of poor oversight, anemic enforcement, and a loophole created by inconsistent agency regulations. The result is a losing proposition for animals who are beaten, kicked, and dragged to their death and consumers who unknowingly consume the meat from sick and injured animals.
