The administration's new budget for 2005 suddenly shifts its outlook down to five years from the usual 10. Why? If voters were to view the real long-term costs of Bush's fiscal policies, they would actually wake up to the looming disaster that might very well turn us into a banana republic.
"If you look at fiscal plicy, it looks like an exploding cigar," said Robert Bixby, director of the Concord Coalition, a bipartisan group that lobbies for greater budgetary discipline. "Focusing on just the next five years ignores all the exploding costs in the out years."
