Wouldn't it be great if your car insurance premium was based on how many miles you drove (in addition to age, location, etc.)? Well, the state of Oregon is in the driver's seat on this one! Read this article in the Grist Magazine and start demanding it in your state.
"The new pricing structure could spur motorists to drive less, which would reduce driving-related problems such as congestion and auto accidents. One study, by Aaron Edlin of the University of California at Berkeley, estimates that a universal system of per-mile auto insurance would reduce driving nationally by about 9 percent with a potential insurance savings of $8 billion a year and congestion-related savings of an additional $9 billion."
...and all that before the environmental savings...

Many car insurance places give you a rate (or "discount") based on your miles now. I know that was on the list of questions I got from GEICO when I just renewed. The people paying for all those extra miles of insurance will be be the same folks paying for gas at 8 or 10 M.P.G. I'll take the discount! Thanks!
Good point, Matthew!
I guess if you don't mind paying for all that extra gas, extra insurance won't slow you down either...
