Earth Day was created in 1970 to spark a revolution against environmental abuse. Global warming is real and we're part of the problem.
Now, we need to become part of the solution:
* Innovate - Recycle Bank in the Philadelphia area "rewards your home for the amount your home recycles. Your RecycleBank Recycling Container has a barcode that is identified by the recycling truck. The amount your home recycles is translated into RecycleBank Dollars that you can use to shop at over 100 participating stores." Cold hard cash rewards to recycle. Now that's a great idea!
* Consume Less - wikiHow is an amazing site that gives you specific "How-To's" on every subject, from "How to Calculate Pi by Throwing Frozen Hot Dogs" to "How to Buy Nothing." Some offshoots of this idea are "How to Buy a Carbon Offset" and today's theme: "How to Celebrate Earth Day!"
* Convince those who still think Global Climate Change is a myth - Over 2000 scientists in 150 countries are 90% certain that humans are contributing to global warming. Global Warming is a FACT, not a BELIEF:
During cold times over the past 600,000 years, the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere was about 180 parts per million (ppm) while during hot periods, the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere measured 280 parts per million (ppm). Today CO2 measures 380 ppm!The same goes for methane, the other main gas contributing to Global Warming. During cold periods over the past 600,000 years, methane measured 1/3 ppm. During hot times it measured 2/3 ppm. Now? It measures 5/3 ppm!
Still have that skeptic at work or at home? Stay up-to-date online with Real Climate, a terrific blog written by top scientists.
{RealClimate is a commentary site on climate science by working climate scientists for the interested public and journalists. We aim to provide a quick response to developing stories and provide the context sometimes missing in mainstream commentary. The discussion here is restricted to scientific topics and will not get involved in any political or economic implications of the science.}
Time is running out. Let's get going!
