In upstate New York, a new crop of windmills is being planted. Each one, called a wind turbine, is 320 feet tall, and is about the same height as Big Ben in London, or the same length as a football field. And these turbines are providing retirement security to more and more farmers as they turn their land into electricity farms.
This recent article in the NY Times outlines one such couple in Lowville, New York. William Burke and his wife have allowed 7 turbines to be built on his 600 acre farm with each one generating an annual lease payment of $5,000 - $10,000.
