With the release of Donald Rumsfeld's new memoir, certain classified papers have recently become unclassified at his site, The Rumsfeld Papers. The most damaging so far is dated September 9, 2002, during the run-up to the March 2003 invasion of Iraq. This memo was mentioned in a recent column by Maureen Dowd, too.
Entitled, "Iraq: Status of WMD Program," the main points are these:
* We assess Iraq is making significant progress in WMD programs.* Our assessments rely heavily on analytic assumptions and judgment rather than hard evidence.
* The evidentiary base is particularly sparse for Iraqi nuclear programs.
* We do not know with any confidence the location of any nuclear weapon-related facilities.
OUR KNOWLEDGE OF THE IRAQI NUCLEAR WEAPONS PROGRAM IS BASED LARGELY - PERHAPS 90% - ON ANALYSIS OF IMPRECISE INTELLIGENCE.
The document was sent to General Richard Myers with this written on the cover letter:
"Please take a look at this material as to what we don't know about WMD. It is big."
Donald Rumsfeld and President Bush should show some remorse for all of the bloodshed spilled and lives disrupted, not to mention helping to bankrupt this country. What a travesty.
