Recently, we have witnessed an extraordinary exposure of US military/intelligence information:
1) The Washington Post's massive website detailing how much our intelligence community has expanded since September 11th is summed up here:
The top-secret world the government created in response to the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, has become so large, so unwieldy and so secretive that no one knows how much money it costs, how many people it employs, how many programs exist within it or exactly how many agencies do the same work.
Take the time to explore this site that took two years to compile.
2) Wikileaks.org has released over 90,000 documents detailing the U.S. involvement in Afghanistan over the past 9 years. It's stunning how much these documents cover, including how the Pakistan intelligence agency conspired with the Taliban to attack U.S. troops. Called the "Afghan War Diaries," some are saying that this leak is the equivalent of the leaking of the Pentagon Papers during the Vietnam War:
25th July 2010 5:00 PM EST WikiLeaks has released a document set called the Afghan War Diary, an extraordinary compendium of over 91,000 reports covering the war in Afghanistan from 2004 to 2010.The reports, while written by soldiers and intelligence officers, and mainly describing lethal military actions involving the United States military, also include intelligence information, reports of meetings with political figures, and related details.
The document collection is available on a dedicated webpage.
The reports cover most units from the US Army with the exception of most US Special Forces' activities. The reports do not generally cover top secret operations or European and other ISAF Forces operations.
Both of these stories broke within a week of each other and represent and extraordinary use of the internet to disseminate massive amounts of important information.
Take your time to read through this stuff. It's as important as it comes...
