Sandra Day O'Connor Resigns

Game on. And don't expect Bush to follow in the footsteps of Clinton when Clinton nominated Orrin Hatch's suggested nominees (Breyer and Ginsburg) - see Kevin Drum's brilliant post.

Expect the game to play out exactly like Brad Plummer over at Mother Jones is predicting. Bush nominates a super extremist like Janice Rogers Brown, the Dems filibuster, Bush reluctantly throws the towel in after reaping the huge windfall of the wingnut's money devoted to this battle, then nominates someone just slightly less extremist. Dems are then forced to give up "for the sake of the nation" and, voila, the nuts have their extremist on the Supreme Court!

Bush couldn't care less about finding middle ground and is only intent on winning and paying back the right-wing taliban that put him in power. Those religious zealots have been pushing for this moment for the past 25 years, and now's their time.

Let's do our part to push back, shall we?
